Rugged mountains of Spiti Valley—large colonies of the Himalayan Giant Honeybee (Apis laboriosa) nesting on a steep rocky cliff. These remarkable bees are famous for constructing massive single-comb hives on vertical rock faces and under natural overhangs in the high Himalayas. Several dark, elongated honeycombs can be seen hanging from the light-colored cliff face. These exposed nests, often reaching up to 1.5 meters in length, are attached securely beneath rocky ledges where they are protected from harsh weather and predators. The colonies form a striking contrast against the barren mountain landscape of Spiti.
