Melicope elleryana is an evergreen tree with a spreading crown; it can grow from 20 - 35 meters tall. The straight, cylindrical bole can be free of branches for most of its height, up to 50cm in diameter, usually with small buttresses that can be up to 2 meters high. The tree is harvested from the wild for local use as a medicine and also for its wood, which is sometimes traded. A commonly cultivated tree in gardens, valued especially because it is fast growing and produces masses of pink flowers which are attractive to birds. A sub-canopy to canopy tree, found in the well-developed rain forest on a variety of sites, often in the more open areas of secondary growth; at elevations from near sea level to 800 meters. he leaves are mashed in water, which is then used as a wash in the treatment
