The Indian star tortoise scientifically known as Geochelone elegans, belongs to a species of tortoise found in semi-arid grassland and scrub forest of India and Sri Lanka. The Star tortoise is a herbivorous animal and grazes primarily upon mixed grass. They also feed on opuntia (prickly pear) cactus, succulents, flowers, and weeds. Unlike other tortoise the star tortoise does not. It is one of the much sought after among exotic pets. They are commonly found in Ceylon and peninsular India and in the areas along the westward of Sind. The star tortoise has also been spotted on the Island of Karaduva and Ramaswaran.
