Even with spiking cases of Corona infections, visitors are seen milling into the entrance of Mumbai Zoo to see the endangered species of big mammals. Delighted visitors are heard squealing at the sight of the single Sloth Bear, Asian Elephant and Royal Bengal Tiger. Do zoos really have a role any longer, especially in cramped big cities like Mumbai where real estate is at a premium, and animals are thus cramped into tiny enclosures? We can only hope for people to be this excited to see these animals in the wild too and not get used to seeing them in captivity.
