Senior Congress leaders were gathering for a post-mortem and on the agenda was a dismal electoral performance in the by-elections and the Assembly Polls in Punjab. But the crucial Congress Working Committee underlined a powerplay evident within the party. The CWC was being held within the aftermath of a strong attack on the Congress president Mr. Sitaram Kesri by the supporters of the former Prime Minister Mr. Narasimha Rao. Rao loyalists held Mr. Kesri personally responsible for the electoral debacle.
