The Sundarbans delta is a rich and fertile basin of highly endangered flora and fauna due to its vibrant physicochemical factors, making it one of the most sensitive ecosystems in the world. Covering India and Bangladesh, this highly active zone supports a diverse gene pool of micro and macrobiotic groups, in which mangrove vegetation occupies a special status as critically endangered. Covering about 40,000 sq. km of the active delta region of which 10,000 sq.km is Sundarban (forest) deltoid floodplains across Bangladesh and India, the Sundarban Region is perhaps the largest unbroken mass of mangrove ecosystem remaining in the world.
