The word hippopotamus comes from the ancient Greek word "river horse". It is a large herbivorous mammal in sub -- Saharan Africa and one of the two species in the Hippopotamidae family. There are an estimated 125,000 to 150,000 hippos throughout Sub-Saharan Africa; Zambia (40,000) and Tanzania (20,000--30,000) possess the largest populations. They are the third largest land mammal in line after the elephant and rhinoceros. The hippopotamus are fondly called as hippos, are semi aquatic, and live mostly in rivers, lakes and swamps. They stay in the water or mud by the day to stay cool and they graze grass at dusk. They stay close to each other while in water. They even have their childbirth in water. They resemble to pigs a lot but their closest relatives from which they diverged about 55 m
