An Ambassador will remain forever etched in the 1990's generation as the lal batti gaadi, with a flag staff to the right of the bonnet, and forever broken down by the side of the road, and being repaired by an old fashioned Indian desi jugaadu mechanic. Somehow one's memory of a Hindustan Ambassador was of a white car carrying kurta-clad netas or politicians in it and racing down the roads of Janpath and Rajpath, or then of a white car sitting in a garage or workshop with a man hunching over under the hood. Such was the car - an unreliable old relic from the Raj! Those same politicians now use Range Rovers and armour-plated BMW's and the Ambassador has been sent out to pasture...
