Located in north-eastern outskirt of Madurai, Yanaimalai is a hill getting increasing attention as one of the important tourist destinations in Madurai. If we break the word “Yanaimalai” into two distinct sections, we have “Yanai” and “Malai”. Yanai is a Tamil word which means “elephant” and “Malai” stands for hill. Therefore the complete meaning of the word “Yanaimalai” is elephant hill. Having a striking resemblance with an elephant, it has received this name. A distant view of it appears to be a seated elephant. It becomes more prominent when one sees it from south west directions. Yanaimalai is located at Othakadai.
