Dr Verghese Kurien on the future of milk cooperatives in India: You must understand what is development. It is just not just milk, milk cooperative or cows. There are nearly 5,00,000 farmers who are members of this cooperative and they own the Amul Dairy. We talk about seeking the larger development, i.e., development of man. Development of milk and development of cows is not as important as the development of man. Dr Verghese Kurien was born on November 26, 1921 to an affluent Syrian Christian family in Calicut (now Kozhikode), Kerala. Dr. Kurien left his government job and joined forces with Tribhuvandas Patel and the farmers to start the Milk Cooperative movement in the region registered under the name of Kaira District Cooperative Milk Producers Union Ltd (KDCMPUL), which was later ren
