High in the forests of Uttarakhand, on the trail to Madhyamaheshwar Temple, an old oak tree becomes a home for a troop of langurs. Its branches are thick with moss and lichen, and new green leaves are just breaking through. A mother sits quietly with her tiny baby pressed against her chest, nursing while she watches the forest around her. Nearby, two langurs groom each other, picking gently through soft pale fur. A young one climbs over an adult, curious and playful. Others rest along the mossy branches, and one stretches out for a lazy sunlit nap. These higher-altitude langur populations live in the cool oak and rhododendron forests of the Himalaya, feeding on leaves, buds and shoots.
