It's the peak of the Indian summer, but that only encourages the phalsa tree to flower and soon lead to the production or a red-burgundy coloured berry that can be eaten as-is (and the seed spat out) or then turned into a phalse-ka-sherbet. It is the perfect antidote to hot summer afternoons. The ratti seed pod, on the other hand, is also ready at this time of year (early May 2017), but is poisonous in nature. That does not mean, however, that it is without use to humans. The ratti / rati seed used to be measure of weight for precious stones and gold jewellery as the seeds measured almost exactly the same weight, without much variance from seed to seed, in olden times.
