One of the most beautiful flowers of the Himalaya and trans-Himalaya, this Gentian grows on vast desolate plateaux as well as on high altitude wind-swept meadows. In some rare cases, the seeds have made their way to the middle hills and can be seen growing as far as at Dhanolti in Uttarakhand. Seen flowering here on the Tibetan plateau, in October, in north Sikkim, the valley flower was carpeted with flowering tussocks, in places! Himalayan Gentian is a critically endangered plant of the Himalayas. Flowers are deep blue, paler in the throat and spotted with green and white, usually two or more on each stem, but sometimes solitary. Flowers are large, narrow funnel-shaped, up to 5 cm, with ovate pointed spreading petals, and small triangular "lobules". Sepal cup is tubular, with narrow linea
