Power demand in Delhi soared to a record 5,925 MW on Tuesday as people in the world's second most populous city battled the hot and humid conditions and consumed more electricity than Mumbai and Kolkata together. Delhi, seat of political power, consumes more electricity than many states including Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, Kerala, Bihar and Jharkhand. Delhi consumes three times more electricity than entire northeastern region comprising seven states. Delhi's demand for electricity broke its own demand thrice this week. Executives in power distribution firms say that if the capital is not cooled by monsoon showers soon, the demand may rise above 6,000 MW.
