Ganga idol is carried in a palanquin to the river at Haridwar, by pandas or Hindu priests. Priests in yellow robes offer prayers to the river eternal from their thali with diya and vermillion red tika powder as well as holy thread. With folded hands, they pray to the river god of the Ganges. They ring a ghanti in their hands and follow the protocol involved. A couple of pandas even have mis-worn masks on their face - wonder of wonders! Lots of police whistles can be heard in all directions, obviously for crowd control and to prevent stampedes. An Uttarakhand Police person also bends down, picks up water in his cupped hand and sprays it around his head, in obeisance. If ever there was an unwiser choice in terms of timing and authorization to hold the Kumbh Mela, we are not aware of it. For
