A Black Redstart (Phoenicurus ochruros) perches on a bare branch against a clear blue sky, warming itself in the morning sun. Its grey head, dark wings, and bright rust-orange breast, belly, and tail glow in the light, and the wind gently ruffles its feathers as it sits still and alert, dark eyes watching its surroundings. The Black Redstart is a common winter visitor to the Himalayan foothills and much of India, arriving from its breeding grounds in Central Asia and the high Himalaya. It favours open, rocky ground, gardens, and forest edges, where it perches conspicuously and flicks its reddish tail, a signature behaviour of the species. Sunbathing like this helps birds warm up, dry their feathers, and keep their plumage in good condition.
