One carelessly tossed bidi by a villager or a cigarette by a wretched ignorant tourist and hundreds, even thousands of acres of prime Himalayan mixed Oak and Rhododendron forest go up in smoke, in the dead of night, and no one cares or acts... This is the sad picture of climate change in the Himalaya wherein the forests are going dry and the moisture is simply not there to sustain green shrubs and sedges on the surface, drying up the grasses and offering them up to potential forest fires. Our newly planted trees in the tree guards died and the Fire deparment helped but their entire jeep carried only 500 liters of water! Climate change has truly started to bite.
