Shoots of hope spring forth among the black cinders and ash of a Himalayan oak forest burned by a forest fire which started due to a careless cigarette butt being thrown into dry leaves. Incalculable habitat damage occurred when this summer-time forest fire hit the slopes around Mussoorie. Nesting birds had their nests, eggs and young chicks destroyed in the flames, the underbrush and understorey were destroyed, and young plants and tree saplings perished as well. However, in the middle of all this, the forest has its own way of regenerating and brings forth fresh growth from in between the ash and blackened charred remains.
