India has more than its share of great cities—there is the modern and ancient city of Delhi, the home of the Taj Mahal—Agra, the center of Hindu faith—Varanasi and the pre-colonial rebel kingdom based in the city of Mysore among other great urban centers. But none typify the British colonial era better than the mega-city of Calcutta. It was from here that the British ran much of their Indian Empire. The city’s core is still based in the many buildings the British built as part of its vast bureaucracy that controlled the great Asian subcontinent. Today Calcutta is a vibrant city with a diverse mix of religions, ethnic groups and political beliefs. It is the jumping off point for some of the most exciting wildlife park in India and the center for culture in the eastern half of the count
