A group of Himalayan ibex seen in the cold desert of the Trans-Himalaya, in the Spiti Valley of Himachal Pradesh. They browse on almost non-existent dry short grass in the winter months, for lack of any other nutrition to keep them going through the long winter months. The larger males have massive horns and long beards, too! Individuals are seen trying to graze on these arid soils where almost nothing grows. Although the temperature reaches some pretty low values, this ibex's thick and woolly coat protects them from the extreme cold. These animals are usually seen in high altitudes but often come to lower elevations during winter, searching for food as the mountains get covered by snow.
