A Himalayan mother bathes her young son in freezing water, in early winter, in the river Ganga at its source in the high Himalaya. The child cries as she splashes the freezing cold water onto his head, after bathing his torso. She even makes him drink the water that is filled with sediment and glacial till and could make the best of us throw-up! Such is the power of belief and religion... She yaks him away and drags him around with his arms out-stretched in the air! At the beginning of winter, the idol at Gangotri temple is moved down, in a procession, to a lower village temple, near Mukhba. The mountains are barely frequented at this time of year, as everyone has moved down to lower heights due to the impending winter.
