Mr. Elephant caught on camera having lunch in Thailand. The largest living land animals on Earth today are Elephants. They get their name Elephant from the Greek word Ivory. They are also the largest land mammals in the family Elephentidae : Elephas and Loxodonta. There are three recognised species of Elephants -- The African bush elephant, The African forest elephant and the Indian / Asian elephant. The other species of Elephantidae are extinct since ice age. Elephants give birth after every 22 months, longest for any earth animal. A healthy newborn weighs around 105 kgs and has a lifespan of 50 to 70 years.
