As life in this cold dry desert of Ladakh is difficult, most of the habitation needs to be near the banks of river Indus. The villages of Nurla and Nimmo are situated on the banks of the river as it offers possibility of vegetation. Also, the village of Nimmu has become a tourist attraction as it is also the confluence of Indus and Zanskar rivers. Both the rivers offer whitewater rafting of Grade 1 and Grade 2, respectively.
