The mid-hill region is a major portion of Nepal and accounts for 43% of the total land area. The region is considered the original heartland of Nepal and includes some of the most beautiful and fertile valleys in the country, in this case, Pokhara along with a rugged mountain topography. Accordingly, climate and the vegetation show great variation over a very short distance and give rise to great ecological diversity and complexity. In general, the area rises towards the north, to the main Himalayan ranges, and up to 30% of these slopes are worked traditionally into innumerable terraces, which are extensively cultivated.
