Irrigation and soil erosion prevention in the Badrinath valley

The Bhotia tribes of the Mana/Badrinath valley primarily engage in potato farming. Being close to the source of the Alaknanda river and fed by water from waterfalls and streams, the whole valley is water abundant. This water from the various sources is well managed by the local people and the Irrigation Department of the Government of Uttarakhand for irrigational purposes leading to good agricultural production. The Irrigation Department undertakes flood control and soil erosion measures in Garhwal and Kumaon Divisions to safeguard the people and minimise the damages due to floods. Contour bunding is promoted to prevent erosion of soil. In addition, avalanche resistant work in Badrinath; soil erosion works in Kedarnath and Gangotri have been undertaken, to safeguard these holy places. Sou
