Corbett Park, in the terai and foothills of the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand, is one of the finest habitats to view the Indian Elephant. See this small herd cross the Dhikala charu in summer-time, kicking up a mini dust storm as the giants proceed, and also bathing in the sand to clean their coats of ticks and other parasites! Elephants are large mammals of the family Elephantidae and the order Proboscidea. Traditionally, two species are recognised, the African elephant (Loxodonta africana) and the Asian elephant (Elephas maximus), although some evidence suggests that African bush elephants and African forest elephants are separate species (L. africana and L. cyclotis respectively).
