Devi Dutt: "I started in 1956 as an apprentice. I joined because I had failed in high school and was not doing well in my studies. My brother, Guru Dutt, forced me to join his company and earn money. He gave me a salary of 75 rupees. My first day of shooting was in Calcutta, where we filmed the song “Jaane Kya Tune Kahi,” featuring Waheeda Rehman. It was a night shoot on the banks of the Hooghly River. That was my first experience on a film set. At that time, I did not know much about sound. I had just joined the company, and we had an assistant named Abdul Majid who taught me how to handle these things."
