This must be one healthy avian individual. Seated comfortably on a tree branch, an Oriental Magpie-Robin is engaged in thorough cleaning of its feathers. The bird fervently preens its feathers, shakes itself off. Notice the bird removing feathers which are not useful anymore. Preening is an important behaviour for the survival of birds. Preening involves aligning the feathers and positioning the small feather barbules like velcro, oiling the feathers to the optimum. This is important for the birds in flying and also keeping off parasites and excess powder from their body. Preening also aids in vitamin D production in birds.
