During the Jeetu Bagdwal festival in the Garhwal Himalaya of Uttarakhand, participants gather for a traditional folk ritual accompanied by singing, dancing, and the rhythmic beats of the dhol and other percussion instruments. According to local belief, some participants enter a ritual trance as part of ceremonies honouring Jeetu Bagdwal, a revered folk hero and local deity associated with agriculture, protection, and the annual paddy planting season. The legend of Jeetu Bagdwal is deeply rooted in the oral traditions of Garhwal. Remembered as a gifted flute player, he is said to have encountered the Aancharis (supernatural beings believed to inhabit the high mountain landscapes around Khait Parvat).
