Ganpati idols being worshipped in a Badlapur home in Maharashtra, India. The idols are then taken to a pond or river for immersion at the end of the festive period. This is a family festival and religious ritual and everyone takes part. Despite the Covid pandemic, people still partake of the ritual, with just a few folks wearing masks. The introduction of the idols with chemical paints, lead, chromium and other metals in them, is fast polluting lakes around the country. To prevent such pollution in natural water bodies, artificial and temporary ponds have been created for the purpose.
