Sourcing water from a bucket which she has filled from a nearby hand pump, a woman carries out her household's laundry out in the open, and on a street side in Meerut, in the Delhi NCR. She uses a detergent cake to rub the jeans and applies water from time to time, scrubbing on the road-side stone itself. Such is life in urban India where millions live out their lives on the roads, streets and on the foot paths meant for commuters to pass by, for the lack of space and the cost of renting a room which they cannot afford.
