Prime sub-Himalayan habitat of the Dooars region, where an extensive network of rivers flow from the mountains bringing down rich alluvial soils and sediment and a year-round flow of clear fresh mountain water. In this case, close to the Sikkim-West Bengal border, this river feed into the Teesta system and provides a rich habitat for aquatic birds in a variety of habitats and interfaces between the rich tall grasslands and the sandy bars where waterfowl feed in the winter months. Thick semi tropical rain forests abound on all sides, with orchids on the trees and habitat and nesting sites for rare birds such as the Rufous-necked Hornbill.
