Chital or Spotted Deer (Axis axis) being tranquilized with a dart gun in Kanha National Park. The forest ranger is firing the tranquiliser gun from elephant-back and once the shot has reached its target, the officers race to the site as the duration of sedation is limited and a maximum amount of work needs to be achieved within that period of time. After being muzzled, the Cheetal is injected by an officer who wears rubber gloves to prevent the spread of germs. Slowly but surely, the 10 ml Dispovan syringe empties the drug into the deer's blood-stream. The Indian Forest Service staff rub the area to ensure maximum effusion of the medicine, massage the deer's heart, weigh the animal and then rapidly move away, even as the deer jumps around in disoriented panic.
