This fascinating footage captures two massive petrified wood logs displayed outside the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, located on the National Mall in Washington, DC. These remarkable fossilized tree trunks originate from Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona, and date back to the Triassic Period, approximately 200 million years ago. Over immense geological time, the original organic wood was gradually replaced by minerals—primarily silica—preserving the structure of the trees in stone form. Set on a raised platform near the museum entrance, the petrified logs serve as a powerful reminder of Earth’s deep past, connecting visitors to prehistoric forests that once thrived long before humans existed.
