Diamond Harbour to Haldia by boat ferry in West Bengal, up the Hooghly or Ganga river: See climate change in action by way of the smaller and disappearing islands in the Bay or Bengal off India's West Bengal coastline. Subsidence is rife and muddy island waters and river banks can be seen on the banks of the Hooghly river which is the local name of the Ganges in this end stage of its life. Retaining walls, steps and buildings have been broken and washed away by successive floods, rains and climate related events. A distant chimney stack spews fumes and pollution smoke into the air, in an environmental double whammy with the muddy flood waters and climate change impact in the foreground.
