A frenzy of activities on the streets and sidewalks of Delhi as Duserrah approaches. Workers make frames of head, torso and crown with bamboo sticks. The frames are then pasted with paper to make it whole while the torso frames are covered in cloth materials and old sarees. The effigies are of the Lankan demon king Ravana who kidnapped Sita in the Hindu epic Ramayana. In the mythological story, Rama defeats Ravan or Ravana to rescue Sita. Hindus today celebrate the victory of Rama and the victory of good over evil by burning down the effigies of Ravana on the last day of Navratri.
