Durga Puja festival comes to the end by immersing colorful statues of goddess Durga into the Yamuna river. Durga Puja is an annual Hindu festival in India and it marks the battle of goddess Durga with the demon Mahishasura and her emerging victorious. On the tenth day of festival, people carry the colorful clay statues to a river and immerse them as form of goodbye. Immersion of idol statues in Yamuna river after Durga Puja pollutes the Yamuna river as status are made using plaster of paris and coated with harmful paints containing heavy metals. Every year at least 15,000 idols of goddess Durga are immersed in the river that releases 16.8 tones of varnish and ganja oil and 32 tones of colors in the water which pollutes the river affecting the aquatic ecosystem as well as human health.
