Unique combinations of geologic colour and erosional forms decorate a canyon that is 277 river miles (446km) long, up to 18 miles (29km) wide, and a mile (1.6km) deep. Grand Canyon overwhelms our senses through its immense size. South Rim is open all year. North Rim is closed for the winter. On February 26, 1919, Grand Canyon became a National Park. This is their Centennial Year! Today Grand Canyon National Park receives close to five million visitors each year - a far cry from the annual visitation of 44,173 which the park received in 1919.
