Like a cut small Swiss town, Madhuban Hotel stands on the main Harsil-Gangotri road. Crates of apples are loaded up on to a local jeep-taxi for transport to the plains and other hill markets, in the hall-autumn apple harvest season in the Himalaya. Boxes of apples have been packed and are ready for despatch to the plains, in top of jeeps that are departing from Harsil and Dharali after the apple crop has been harvested in early winter. Uttarakhand is becoming quite an apple producing state, on par with Himachal in terms of quality, possibly better in terms of Harsil apples, but much smaller in acreage and number of trees grown.
