Indus river with Stakna monastery in Ladakh, Jammu & Kashmir: India derives her name from the Indus Located 30 km from Leh on the banks of the Indus River, Stakna Monastery gets its name from the shape of the hill it is built on. Stakna literally means tiger’s nose and that’s exactly how the hill looks like. Stakna Monastery is affiliated to the Drukpa lineage of Tibetan Buddhism and was established during the second half of the 16th century by a Bhutanese scholar named Chosje Jamyang Palkar. The monastery is known for the sacred statue of Arya Avalokitesvara which was donated by the people of Kamrup in Assam.
