A male Purple Sunbird in full breeding plumage as well as a female feed on nectar from the red flowers of a Hamlia Patens shrub. Purple Sunbirds (Cinnyris asiaticus) primarily feed on nectar but also eat small insects. Hamelia Patens is a large shrub commonly known as firebush, scarlet bush or hummingbird bush. Both its flower nectar as well as its small edible fruit attract a large number of insects and birds which act as its cross-pollinators.
