A ridge of snow-capped Himalayan peaks stretches across the horizon, golden alpine grass sloping away in the foreground — and somewhere along that same high country, a procession moves on foot, carrying a gold-crowned, flower-wrapped palanquin between them. This is the palanquin (Doli) of Baba Rudranath, one of the Panch Kedar — the five sacred Shiva temples of the Garhwal Himalaya, along with Kedarnath, Tungnath, Madhyamaheshwar and Kalpeshwar. At Rudranath, it's the face (mukha) of Shiva that's worshipped, in a natural rock shrine set within dense rhododendron forest and high alpine meadow above 3,500 metres. Each winter, as snow closes the temple, the deity is ceremonially carried down in this same palanquin to the Gopinath Temple in Gopeshwar, where it remains enshrined and worshipped
