Clad in traditional attire men and women stand in the cold water in winter to pray to the Sun god and offer 'arghya' to the sun rising.Chhath Puja is one of the ancient rituals that date backs to the Vedic times. Standing in the extremely cold water the devotees pray to the sun god for the prosperity and well-being of their family. A woman clad in a traditional saffron saree and applying saffron vermillion on their heads she takes a coconut in her hand and offers it to the sun god as a part of her prayer. Chhath puja is performed on Kartika Shukla Shashthi, which is the sixth day of the month of Kartika in the Vikram Samvat.
