Farmers of West Bengal prepare soil for cultivating jimikand which is better known as elephant foot yam in English, Elephant foot yam grows well in rich red-loamy and well drained soil. Well-drained, fertile, sandy loam soil is ideal for elephant foot yam cultivation. The crop can be grown in other soil types including laterite soils also by raising the crop in pits filled with well-decomposed farmyard manure and good sandy loam soil. Water stagnation at any stage adversely affects crop growth, tuberisation and tuber quality.
