Around a 100kms from Shillong along the India-Bangladesh border,nestled amidst the lush green forests of the East Khasi Hills in Meghalaya, lies a magical paradise called ‘Mawlynnong’ - a small village which won the status of being the cleanest village in the year 2003, not just in India, but in all of Asia. As of 2011, there are about 82 households in Mawlynnong. All the credit for this cleanliness goes to the villagers and their close-knit community. They are not dependent on any external aid. They feel responsible and go about their lives with dedication and determination. All walkways are decorated with flowering vines, making it look more like botanical garden than a humble village.
