Village women wash their freshly-washed vegetables in a pond at Morena Dhar between Mussoorie and Uttarakashi. The water is not particularly clean and cattle wash and defecate around it, so the purpose is sort of defeated. Washing vegetables is an extra measure that prevents food-borne illnesses, including those caused by bacteria such as Salmonella, Listeria and E. coli. In addition, washing vegetables can eliminate any residue left by harmful pesticides.
