Enormous scale of the Gangasagar Mela, one of India’s largest religious gatherings held annually on Sagar Island at the sacred confluence where the Ganges River meets the Bay of Bengal. Vast crowds of Hindu pilgrims spread across the sandy shoreline as devotees gather for the traditional holy dip during Makar Sankranti. Rows of temporary shelters, thatched-roof camps, service areas, and pathways stretch across the island to accommodate the millions of visitors arriving from different parts of India. Many pilgrims can be seen entering the shallow waters to perform ritual bathing believed to purify the soul and wash away sins.
