Like the ghorpittha or ghor of Shivaji lore, this Monitor Lizard has an affinity for climbing along walls. A Monitor was said to have climbed the fort walls, thus allowing troops to ascend the fort despite very tall and steep walls, to aid Shivaji's troops scale the wall. Monitor lizards are generally large lizards, although some can be as small as 20 cm (7.9 in) in length. A total of 73 species are currently recognized; however, given that several species-groups are in need of taxonomic review, this number is certain to be increased with future research. They have long necks, powerful tails and claws, and well-developed limbs. Most species are terrestrial, but arboreal and semiaquatic monitors are also known.
