Clothes and sarees spread out to dry on the Parazhiyar river side in Kanyakumari, the southernmost tip of Indian peninsular. Kanyakumari district is the southern-most district in Tamil Nadu. It is the second largest district in the state in terms of population density and the second most urbanized -- next only to Chennai district. The district derives its name from the Goddess Kanniya Kumari Amman enshrined in the temple located at the southern-most tip of main-land India, Kanyakumari. The district stand first in terms of literacy rate in the state. The district has a varied topography with sea on three sides and the mountains of the Western Ghats bordering the northern side.
