The standing wheat crop was flattened and thus destroyed after unseasonal spring-time rains in the north Indian plains of Uttar Pradesh, in the spring-summer of 2023, thanks for western disturbances bringing unseasonable rain from the Mediterranean region to north India. Standing wheat plants were flattened by the wind and rain combination and made useless for consumption, as it was too early to harvest the unripe what ears, and by flattening the plants, the wheat ears rotted in the standing water and soil. Unseasonable heavy rains in north India lead to mass destruction of wheat crops due to climate change. Climate change is causing widespread crop failures, due to out of season and unexpected rainfall. Larger events of this kind can cause national-level food shortages and food insecurity
